No, I haven’t turned into a mother overnight but for most of the day yesterday, Facebook was covered in the back to school photos and it got me thinking. Do we as adults have a back to school regime like the kids? I mean, we’re not in Markie’s trying on school uniforms and buying blazers 2 sizes too big, but there are some tasks that I think are definitely *back to school* based. I don’t know about you but I never experienced the back to school buzz like most kids seemed to. I absolutely hated school but I did love getting new stationery and new shoes….obvs!
I have compiled a list of what I think is a good back to school task for us adults. I hope it’s useful! Enjoy.
Let’s start at the very beginning. Your desk. Wherever this is; home, office, kitchen table let’s give it a clear. Delve down deep into those drawers and remove those 8,765 pens you have in there. While we are there, let’s give it a clean, cos you know Covid, dust, dirt, bleurgh!! Wack out the Dettol and let’s get clean!
Moving on to your computer or laptop. Now, this is a task I do weekly as my computer has zero storage and after a day’s work, it is usually full to the brim with photos, graphics, memes, docs, videos, the bloody lot! Mine is stripped back most nights but if you’re anything like my husband then I know yours will be chocca. Let’s get everything backed up. Folders reorganised, files deleted. When all that’s done, delete all your cache folder and delete your trash.
How good is that feeling though!? Just me? OK then!
If you’re feeling fancy you can move onto a bit of Anti Virus Software clean up. Just to make sure you haven’t missed anything. I like to clean out my bookmark folder too as I’m logged into 3 accounts on my comp and 3 different Google accounts depending on what work I’m doing for that day and my bookmarks can get a bit messy. On my phone, I’ve got 35 Google Chrome tabs open at the min! So, I like to work through my bookmarks and delete any ones I don’t use or that I haven’t used in the past couple of months.
Then it’s onto the emails. No new emails or 88,667,898,876 emails to attend to. You’re either 1 of 2 types of people. I’m the latter. A clean and tidy inbox is a clean and tidy mind for me. I literally cannot function in the morning if my emails are a show, it messes with my equilibrium. I like to create folders and file everything away. Beautiful!
Next is your phone. We are on our phones constantly but when was the last time you ever switched it off? I like to give it a little off and on again as we all know that is the only way to fix electrical items. I don’t know if this actually does anything. In my head, it’s like a little reset to fix any issues you didn’t know you had. Then back up your phone. Or at least check it’s connected to whatever cloud-based storage you are using. The worst nightmare is losing everything off your phone. I’m obsessed with backing up! It’s a weekly task for me now as a hard drive failed on me once and it was one of the most horrific experiences ever. I learned my lesson the hard way and now I back up religiously. While you’re there considering printing off some of your pictures and making a photo album. I use Snapfish and every month I get 50 free prints and all you have to pay is the postage! It’s such a good deal, I order mine at the end of every month and now I’m building up a nice collection of photo albums that I love sitting down and looking back on. More info here.
If you don’t have auto-update on, give your apps a little update and delete the ones you don’t use and if you don’t use folders then maybe now is the time to give them a go. My home screen is ridiculous but I can’t help it. I love me a folder! Update your software if needed and clear out your cache and you’re done!
What about stationery I hear you cry!? Stationery is one of life’s joys. Nothing better than a fresh notebook and a good set of pens and don’t even get me started on post-it notes! I can’t get enough! If you’re buying the kids some bits then why not treat yourself!? Don’t forget ink and paper for the printer too! Maybe some more blue tack and sellotape. Get prepped for Christmas while you’re there!
September is a brilliant time to start a new routine. During lockdown I had a nice, easy day-to-day routine and now that the rules have been relaxed my routine has gone to pot and life P.C. (pre-covid) has resumed and I for one am not having it! I enjoy structure and only good things come from me having a routine. I’m less stressy, not as busy, sleep better, eat better and I definitely get fewer headaches! This all comes from the beauty of a routine. I’m really going to try to get back into my days P.C. and that includes taking more time for me. I got quite selfish towards the end of lockdown, nothing was stopping me from having a bit of self-care, I was ON IT! Sadly, now it’s a distant memory but not for long, as soon as my to-do list is done I will be back on it!
While we are talking about routine why not take a look back at the resolutions you made in the new year! How’s that going? Have you kept them? Broken them? If you forget about them maybe with the new routine, now is a good time to start. There is definitely time to tick them off the list before January rears its ugly head again!
That’s it for me, I’m off to deep clean my desk!
See you on the next one!
